How To Pull Off the Best Senior Pranks

- Will it cause any permanent damage?
- Who will clean up afterwards?

- Are there any potential unforeseen consequences?
- What will you do if things go wrong?
- Is your prank potentially offensive to specific groups (e.g., women or minorities) or people?

BAD PRANK: “Seniors cut down several trees on campus, resulting in charges being filed.” —Sarah R.
LESSON: Don’t do anything that will cause permanent changes or damage or is illegal!
BAD PRANK: “The kids baby-oiled the hallways and were going to pull the fire alarms, but they got caught and we went into lockdown instead.” —Kate W.
LESSON: Don’t plan a prank that could be dangerous (imagine all the injuries that could have been suffered).
BAD PRANK: “A group of senior boys attempted to cement the front doors of the school shut. Thankfully, either they didn’t mix the concrete correctly or something with the temperature didn’t allow it to set correctly. They took that ‘prank’ a little too far and were charged with vandalism or criminal mischief, if memory serves me correctly.” —Amanda M.
LESSON: Don’t do anything that will be extremely difficult to set right or could require major repairs. Plus, this could have caused a dangerous situation if there were a fire or other emergency.
BAD PRANK: “Seniors let loose a whole flock of chickens they raised in the school over the weekend. They had to shut down the school for 3 days due to sanitation cleanup. Big scrape!!” —Sadi R.
LESSON: This caused a big mess that someone else had to clean up. Plus, it wasn’t safe for the animals, and it was potentially dangerous for humans too.

These senior prank ideas (shared by real teachers) aren’t too complicated, so you can squeeze in one last laugh with minimal effort!
The “Fight”
This one is quick and funny, but be careful not to cause too much chaos before revealing the joke: “The students all gathered around yelling ‘Fight! Fight!’ When the staff broke it up, it was two students playing with a Rock ’Em Sock ’Em Robots game!” —Susan N.
Principal + Mariachi Band
You’ll need to raise a little money for this festive senior prank idea. “The seniors hired a mariachi band to follow the principal around for a couple of hours. He was a great sport about it. The prank ended up being featured on the local news.” —Beth H.
Graduation Eggs
Commencement is a solemn ceremony, but if you do it right, you can bring a little lighthearted fun to the event, like these kids did. “The seniors didn’t do a prank in the building, but instead each of them handed the superintendent an egg when they received their diploma.” —Jeanne T.
Graduation Marbles
Eggs too tricky to carry? Try something smaller! “A single marble in each graduate’s hand given to the superintendent when shaking hands at graduation. There were 942 graduates and the superintendent’s son was the last to cross the stage!” —Bonny B.
School for Sale
This is one of the most popular senior pranks, often involving a giant sheet turned into a For Sale sign hung on the school. But here’s another way to do it: “Students in another high school in my district made a Zillow listing for their school.” —Bailey M.
Bring Your Dog to School Day
This sounds like fun, but be sure to plan how you’ll safely care for and clean up after any animals that are involved. “Students all brought their dogs to school and claimed to have special permission from the principal. He was off campus that day so it took a bit to confirm they did not [have permission].” —Sarah R.
Everybody Inside
“My graduating class was 65 students, so we crammed into our principal’s office to surprise him. The extra surprise is that we rearranged everything we could fit in there!” —Taylor H.
Unique Senior Prank Ideas
These pranks might take a bit more time and teamwork, but they’re bound to make a lasting impression of the class of 2025!
Principal’s Office Relocation

“The relocation of the principal’s office—including literally everything that wasn’t nailed down—out onto the field. Everything was in the same position as in his actual office, and they ran I don’t know how many feet of electrical cord so that he was fully able to work outside for the day.” —Sarah J.
School Petting Zoo
“The best prank I have witnessed was when the seniors transformed the staff parking lot into a petting zoo. Goats, cows, sheep, etc. Hay bales for a border. They had to start pretty early to have that all set up before anyone arrived.” —Lavon H.
Christmas Repeat
This one will take a little advance planning, so you’ll have to think ahead. “At a nearby high school, the kids collected discarded Christmas trees and saved them until spring. Then on senior prank day, they ‘planted’ the trees in the soccer field. Some were even decorated!” —Amy J.
Day at the Beach
“The seniors made a ‘poolside lounge’ in the intersection in front of the high school office. They had pool chairs, a small kiddie pool (filled with water!), and lots of pool toys. The principal thought it was a hoot and sat in a pool chair with her feet in the pool before school started.” —Lauren M.
Cards, Cards, Cards
“A class printed thousands of business cards that said something like, ‘There are 5,000 of these hidden around the school. Good luck getting rid of us.’ It was last year’s group, and I still find them sometimes in books or behind a piece of furniture. I think they are funny and harmless.” —Kassie D.
Student Switch
“Most of the seniors at our school set it up with our superintendent and the superintendent of our rival school. The seniors from each school secretly switched schools for the day. I walked into my first period class, and it was full of 30 kids I had never seen before. I played it off in stride and went around giving them names that I thought they looked like … then 30 more seniors from the rival school packed in, followed by a television crew and our superintendent. It was pretty well done!” —Jason J.
Student Switch, Take Two
You’ll definitely need help from the administration for this, but the reaction will be priceless! “Best senior prank ever! Seniors in a history class. The teacher was called out to the office for a minute. While he was gone, all the seniors went into the room next door and a class of second graders filled the room. When the teacher came back in … lol!” —Jacqueline P.
Troll Toss
This could work with any small, fun toy: “Over 300 of those crazy-haired trolls hidden all throughout the school building … tossed up onto high ledges too. Students continued to stumble across those trolls for several more years, and one was so high that no one can get it … so there sits the crazy orange hair.” —Catherine F.
Car Capers
Senior pranks involving cars have been around for decades. “In 1979, we took apart a VW Bug and reassembled it in the enclosed school courtyard,” remembers Audrianne H. Another school’s class took things even further: “The welding program seniors welded a VW Bug around the flagpole the day before graduation. The school couldn’t get it off in time, so everyone showing up for graduation had to walk past their prank. Happy ending—they showed up the next day and removed it, so the school didn’t have to pay for it.” —Heather F.
Wrap It Up
“When my husband was principal at our local high school, seniors got into his office and individually wrapped EVERYTHING with aluminum foil—every book, pen, file folder, etc.!” —Kellie P.
Inside Out
“The seniors thought they would ‘sneak in’ to the school late at night and put all the senior teachers’ furniture in the hallways. What they didn’t know? We knew about it! It was great fun and everyone helped clean up afterwards!” —Brianna A.
Parking Lot Prank
“Seniors camped out all night in the parking lot in all the teachers’ parking spots. Had a blast and in the morning directed teacher and bus traffic to all the student parking spots. Bonding senior moment, and good laugh for the teachers having to walk from the distant parking spots.” —Heather H.
Face to Face
“At my alma mater, the seniors put their faces (life-size or perhaps bigger) on stakes and put them in the principal’s yard at night. He woke up to 100 student faces in his front yard!” —Joan S.
Balloon Room
Here’s another popular senior prank idea: filling a stairwell, classroom, or other school room with lots and lots of balloons. “Students filled the principal’s office with balloons. He brought his kids in so they could play in the balloon pit!” —Sarah S.
Tractor Tomfoolery
Lots of senior pranks involve kids driving unusual vehicles to school, especially in farm country where they have access to unique equipment. “In a rural school district, the seniors all drove their biggest tractors to school and took all of the parking spots!” —Randi L.
