REPORT – The Mosaic of Women Pastoralists: Challenging Preconceptions and Celebrating Strengths

Date:

Our West Africa Programme partner, Réseau Bilital Maroobe (RBM), has conducted an innovative study titled “The Mosaic of Women Pastoralists.” This study aims to integrate women’s perspectives into RBM’s policies and activities in pastoral areas, acknowledging and celebrating the invaluable contributions of women pastoralists.

Key Highlights:

250 stories gathered in 9 countries by 18 Young Ambassadors of Pastoralism.

350 participants (75% women and 25% men) self-analyzed their stories to find meaning.

30 youths and adults, including both men and women, interpreted thousands of data points to create a comprehensive mosaic of women pastoralists in West Africa.

Purpose of the Study:

– Challenge preconceived notions about women pastoralists.

– Understand the roles and motivations of women pastoralists in their environments.

– Focus on women’s talents and strengths, shifting away from narratives of vulnerability.

This participatory action-research approach allowed men and women to share and analyze their stories, transforming them from research subjects to co-researchers. The interpretation workshop further united participants to give meaning to the collected data, highlighting the dynamic and essential roles of women pastoralists.

The report is available in French here.
