After a multiyear collaboration with individuals with Down syndrome and other disabilities, one of the world’s largest footwear companies is rolling out a shoe designed to specifically meet their needs.
Adidas launched the Supernova Rise 3 Adaptive over the weekend, timed to coincide with World Down Syndrome Day on March 21.
The new model features a step-in heel for hands-free entry, a low-pressure lacing system, softer foam, a wider fit to allow toes to spread naturally and prints designed to accommodate those with visual or sensory needs, among other modifications.

Adidas said last year that it was working with Chris Nikic, who made headlines as the first person with Down syndrome to complete an Ironman, on a design. In a promotional video released at that time, people with Down syndrome and their family members said they often experience pain because shoes are not designed to fit feet with a wider toe area and narrower heel or very tiny, but wide feet.
In addition to Nikic, Adidas said it partnered with GAMUT Management, a consulting firm that helps brands develop adaptive products, to conduct focus groups that included wheelchair users, people with chronic illnesses, those with mobility and fine motor challenges and individuals with upper and lower limb differences. Two Paralympians — Tracy Otto, an archer, and Haven Shepherd, a swimmer — were among the participants.
“We’ve spent countless hours listening to and innovating alongside adaptive athletes and people with disabilities to create a shoe that addresses the real needs of a diverse population. We’re building truly equitable products for the entire running community, ensuring adaptive performance isn’t treated as an afterthought,” said Patrick Nava, global general manager at Adidas Running.
Adidas previously worked with Nikic on a campaign to urge marathons to set aside bib number 321 for neurodivergent runners.
Other athletic footwear companies including Nike and have also offered shoes with various adaptive features.
The Supernova Rise 3 Adaptive is now available online and in select retail stores for $140.
