Renewing your Ohio teaching license requires completing state-approved professional development and submitting your renewal before your license expires. While some professional development may be available through your district, you may need to complete additional coursework or continuing education.
Whether you are currently teaching or maintaining your license outside the classroom, it is important to understand Ohio’s renewal requirements so you can plan ahead.
Renewal Requirements
To renew a five-year Professional or Associate teaching license in Ohio, you must complete one of the following before your license expires:
- Six (6) semester hours of coursework related to your teaching assignment or licensure area; or
- Eighteen (18) Continuing Education Units (CEUs) (180 contact hours); or
- A combination of semester hours and CEUs, if approved by your Local Professional Development Committee (LPDC)
If your license has lapsed, Ohio generally requires nine (9) semester hours of coursework for reinstatement.
You can find more specifics on these requirements in the Ohio Administrative Code Rule 3301-24-08:

What Type of Training Can You Take?
Professional development used for Ohio renewal must:
- Be directly related to classroom instruction or your licensure area
- Support professional growth and student learning
Examples of acceptable training include:
- College or university coursework aligned to your certificate area
- Online or in-person professional development workshops
- Conferences, institutes, or seminars related to teaching practice
Employed educators typically work with their LPDC to create an Individual Professional Development Plan (IPDP) that identifies which training will be used for renewal.
If you are not employed but still need to renew your license, you may complete university coursework to earn your graduate-level credits for renewal.
How Do You Renew?
Once you have completed your required professional development, you renew your license through Ohio’s educator licensure system, the CORE online application system.
Steps typically include:
- Complete your approved professional development hours or credits
- Collect documentation (transcripts, certificates, contact-hour logs)
- Submit your renewal application through Ohio’s CORE online application system
- Pay the required renewal fee
