The EU Support to End Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (ESGBV) in Nigeria Programme is a strategic intervention funded by the European Union and implemented by International IDEA to strengthen Nigeria’s response to sexual and gender-based violence at federal, state and community levels.
Building on the achievements of previous EU-supported initiatives, including the EU-UN Spotlight Initiative and the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC II) Programme, the project adopts a holistic and survivor-centred approach to preventing and responding to SGBV in Nigeria.
The programme focuses on strengthening legal and policy frameworks such as the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act, improving access to quality essential services for survivors, and transforming harmful social norms that perpetuate violence against women, girls, men and boys.
The intervention supports the expansion and strengthening of Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs), shelters, legal aid systems, specialised courts, and coordinated referral pathways to ensure survivors have access to justice, healthcare, psychosocial support, and protection services.
In addition, the programme works closely with government institutions, civil society organisations, women’s rights groups, traditional and religious leaders, media actors, and communities to promote awareness, advocacy, accountability, and behavioural change.
Special attention is given to underserved and vulnerable populations, including women and girls in rural and conflict-affected communities, persons with disabilities, and victims of technology-facilitated violence.
Through strengthened institutions, enhanced coordination, increased public awareness, and improved survivor-centered services, the ESGBV programme seeks to contribute to a safer, more inclusive, and more equitable Nigeria free from sexual and gender-based violence.
