Action Against Hunger Receives $1 Million in OCHA Funding to Continue Ebola Response in Uganda

Date:

Action Against Hunger has received an allocation of $1 million from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) to strengthen prevention and preparedness efforts in Uganda as the Ebola Bundibugyo virus (EBV) outbreak in neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo continues to escalate and spread closer to the Ugandan border.

This additional funding comes at a critical time, enabling Action Against Hunger to expand prevention activities and help reduce the risk of cross-border transmission. The organization has been a frontline responder in Uganda since the first case was identified in Kampala on 15 May 2026. Teams are actively implementing Infection Prevention and Control (IPC), Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE), Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), surveillance, and coordination activities.

With the additional funding, Action Against Hunger will continue prioritizing high-risk border areas, where teams are conducting surveillance and screening at key entry points and training health personnel on EBV response. The organization’s actions towards infection prevention and deployment of control equipment and health staff training have already improved response capacity in over 50 hospitals in targeted areas. Information about EBV symptoms, prevention measures, and when to seek care has also been integrated into the organization’s multisectoral programming, which reached 367,000 people last year. In rural communities where access to health and prevention services can be limited, Action Against Hunger staff are going door-to-door to provide critical information and resources directly to over 2,000 individuals to date.

By reinforcing coordination mechanisms, expanding access to reliable information, engaging with communities, and strengthening surveillance and healthcare capacity, Action Against Hunger remains committed to standing alongside communities and partners in Uganda.
