Finding the right books for students who have graduated from leveled readers and decodable texts but aren’t quite ready for traditional, longer chapter books can be tricky. These kids are often interested in reading chapter books but still need support as they build confidence and stamina. That’s why 2nd grade teacher Katie Tracy was excited to introduce Simon & Schuster Star Chapter Books to her students.
Katie, who teaches 2nd grade in Lockport, Illinois, says the series immediately won over her class with its engaging characters, bold two-color illustrations, and short, approachable chapters. From laughing along with the Dog Meets Dog series to solving mysteries with the Sherlock Roach series and debating the antics of The Super Roomies series, her students were constantly asking to read the next book.
We caught up with Tracy to learn how she uses Star Chapter Books in her classroom and why she believes they’re such a powerful tool for developing young readers.
What stands out to you about Star Chapter Books?
One of the first things that stood out to me about Star Chapter Books was the cast of fun, relatable characters. Whether the stories feature dogs, insects, or groups of friends, they are filled with characters that 2nd graders can easily connect with because they build on experiences and interests children already have.
The illustrations are bright and engaging and help keep young readers excited to turn the page. I also appreciated that the chapters are just the right length. They are not so long that they feel intimidating, but they are long enough to help build reading stamina and confidence. With only a few lines of text on each page, these books feel approachable for developing readers while still providing an authentic chapter book experience.
The topics are playful, engaging, and highly relatable for this age group. I also love that the books include text features like a table of contents, which is an important resource we emphasize in 2nd grade.
How do these books help support developing readers?
Star Chapter Books are a wonderful bridge for students who are ready to move beyond early readers but are not quite prepared for longer, more challenging chapter books. Many 2nd graders are eager to read “big kid” books, but they can quickly become discouraged if the text feels overwhelming. These books meet students right where they are by providing an authentic chapter book experience with manageable chapters, supportive illustrations, and just the right amount of text on each page.
The engaging characters and relatable storylines also help motivate students to keep reading. When children are invested in the story and excited to find out what happens next, they naturally build reading stamina without even realizing it. The illustrations provide additional support for comprehension, allowing readers to use both the text and pictures to decipher meaning as they read.
How did your students react to Star Chapter Books?
My students could not get enough of these books! I was so glad I had two of the Dog Meets Dog books by Dan Yaccarino because as soon as I finished the first one, they immediately started asking me to read another. Many of my students connected with the silly younger brother, Bones. They laughed throughout the story and loved comparing him to themselves or to their own younger siblings. My class especially loved Dog Meets Dog: Framed in Paris because we had recently completed a science unit on towers and spent time researching the Eiffel Tower. They were so excited to recognize something they had learned about in science while reading a fun chapter book.
Sherlock Roach and the Case of the Crunchy Crumb by Joe McGee was another classroom favorite. We had spent an entire quarter in our ELA curriculum learning about insects, so my students already had plenty of background knowledge. They loved recognizing different insects throughout the story, and the mystery element kept everyone guessing until the very end. There is nothing like a good whodunit to keep 2nd graders engaged!
How do Star Chapter Books compare to other early chapter books?
What sets the Star Chapter Books apart from other early chapter books is how accessible they are for developing readers. The combination of colorful illustrations, just one or two lines of text per page, and short, manageable chapters helps students feel successful from the very beginning. Instead of feeling overwhelmed by long pages of text, readers can focus on building fluency and comprehension while still enjoying the experience of reading a real chapter book.
I also appreciate that these books meet 2nd graders at such an important stage in their reading journey. This is the year many students transition from learning to read to reading to learn. Star Chapter Books provide the perfect balance of support and challenge, helping students build confidence as they take that next step. They leave readers feeling proud of themselves and excited to pick up another chapter book, which is exactly the kind of reading experience we want to create in the classroom.
Anything else teachers should know?
If there is one thing I would want other educators to know, it is that Star Chapter Books truly make the transition to chapter books feel exciting and achievable for young readers. They are engaging enough to capture students’ attention, while also providing the support they need to build confidence and independence. My students looked forward to every read-aloud, and it was so rewarding to watch them eagerly check the books out to read on their own or share with their families at home.
