Learnings from Crystal Riverfront Park
First, the group visited Crystal Riverfront Park in Carbondale, Colorado. Before restoration, the river was wide and shallow. The project created a low-flow channel to concentrate water and provide deeper habitat for fish. Large boulders provided additional cover and new plants along the banks are restoring streamside vegetation. The restoration project effectively transformed the river corridor into a space that’s more welcoming for people and improved the aquatic habitat.

Here, we saw how ecological restoration can also improve people’s connection to the river. New stairs, an ADA-accessible path, and fishing access make the river easier to reach. An outdoor classroom and interpretive signage have turned the park into a learning environment, with local schools now using the site in their curricula. Meanwhile, quieter sections of the park are designed with wildlife in mind, as a way to prevent humans from disturbing the riparian habitat.
Engaging the Community in Restoration Decisions
The restoration planning process was just as important to RFC as the physical design. RFC invited community members to weigh in on design options and share what they wanted from the park. Locals wanted a primary gathering area paired with quieter spaces. These were prioritized as objectives in the restoration process. Later, RFC surveyed the community and stakeholders post-restoration to understand whether the finished project met those earlier objectives.
This part of the trip offered an important reminder for the group: real community engagement is more than simply handing people information. It is about listening, identifying where collaboration is possible, and being clear about how community input will influence decisions.
The group then had the chance to explore how they could take lessons from RFC back to their own watershed projects. Balancing Needs on the Frying Pan River
The group’s visit to the Frying Pan River offered a different lesson in river management. Here, in Basalt, communities have embraced their rivers as public spaces. The Roaring Fork Conservancy’s River Center, built on a reclaimed brownfield (i.e., former industrial site), supports environmental education, fishing programs, and water-quality monitoring. Nearby improvements to the riverfront have created new spaces for gathering and recreation, connecting downtown Basalt with the river.
As a more established community river hub, RFC works with reservoir managers and other stakeholders to coordinate flows. They have also piloted winter water leasing to help reduce anchor ice impacts on macroinvertebrates. Water releases from Ruedi Reservoir also illustrate the complicated relationships among downstream water needs, river health, recreation, and fisheries.
The Takeaway
Across both days of the field trip, one lesson stood out: successful river work is as much about people as it is about water. These restoration projects showed the value of combining science, collaboration, education, and community needs. Seeing these ideas at work beside the rivers themselves made the lessons especially memorable. We look forward to following up on these learnings with the Colorado Watershed Planning Peer Learning Network as more restoration projects are dreamed into existance.
