Why You Sometimes Feel More Anxious After Making the Right Decision

Date:

If you’ve ever felt anxious after making a big decision, you’re not alone. There are psychological and physiological factors that may help explain why anxiety sometimes lingers even after a decision feels right. Here are some possible explanations, along with mindfulness practices that may help you navigate the uncertainty.

Some people expect an instant sense of calm after they’ve made the “right” choice, but that’s not always how the brain and body respond. When you make a decision, such as changing careers or setting a firm boundary, the stress or uncertainty surrounding that choice may not immediately disappear. Even after deciding, you might continue to feel anxious about what the future holds.

Major decisions can introduce uncertainty, making it harder to anticipate what comes next. That unpredictability may register as anxiety or dread in the body, even when you feel confident about your decision
