Our new regional hub will deepen conservation work in Indonesia and help take reef solutions further.
We’re excited to share that the Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL) has launched the Coral Triangle Hub, focused initially on Indonesia. This is a major step in CORAL’s growth: a chance to work more closely with partners in one of the world’s most important regions for marine biodiversity, and to help advance locally led solutions for healthier, more resilient reefs.
The Coral Triangle is home to extraordinary marine life and communities whose livelihoods and cultures are closely connected to the ocean. Spanning parts of six countries across Southeast Asia and the Pacific, the Coral Triangle is the global center of marine biodiversity. Protecting reefs here takes more than good intentions. It calls for strong science, trusted local partnerships, effective management, and sustainable financing to support long-term conservation. Our new hub gives CORAL a regional base from which to build those relationships and work with partners to advance shared priorities in the Indo-Pacific.
Building Coral Reef Resilience in Indonesia
Indonesia will be the center of our initial deep work. We’re building on our partnership with the Coral Triangle Center (CTC) and preparing to bring local and regional partners together to shape priorities. We will hire local leadership to guide the hub’s work and strengthen its presence in the region to support meaningful, lasting conservation outcomes for coral reefs.
A key focus that is taking shape is a Roadmap to Reef Resilience: an approach that brings data, community priorities, and sustainable financing together to help guide reef management. The idea is to connect what science can tell us about reef conditions and pressures with what communities and local leaders know about their needs and priorities – and then consider what resources are needed to put effective management into practice.
This work builds on years of collaboration in Indonesia and the Philippines through the Climate REEFS project, which makes the launch of the Coral Triangle Hub especially meaningful. We want to develop a practical roadmap with the people and organizations who know these reefs best. Together, we can identify where stronger management could make a meaningful contribution to reef resilience and what it will take to sustain that work.
On the ground in the Maluku Islands, we’re talking with partners and assessing where CORAL can contribute to reef resilience. Together, we’re exploring opportunities to strengthen the management of marine protected areas and identifying wastewater solutions that could help reduce pressure on reefs and coastal communities. These conversations will help us understand local priorities, needs, and opportunities and shape an approach grounded in the Malukus and led alongside regional partners.

Building on Our Conservation Work in the Eastern Caribbean
Our expansion into the Eastern Caribbean last year has already reinforced the value of listening first, working through local partnerships, and connecting reef health with community needs. In Dominica, our partnerships are advancing work on both wastewater infrastructure and marine protected area management. That experience gives us an even stronger starting point for the Coral Triangle: clearer questions, a sharper sense of how CORAL can contribute, and an appreciation for the time and trust needed to build lasting solutions.
But each region is different. The work in Indonesia must reflect Indonesia’s own ecosystems, institutions, and priorities. Our Eastern Caribbean experience informs how we begin; our partners in the Coral Triangle will shape what comes next.
Turning Local Partnerships into Lasting Impact
This new hub lets us bring CORAL’s experience into a region where strong partnerships and locally led conservation can have lasting impact. It also gives us a chance to build regional expertise from the start, connect partners around shared priorities, and link science, community knowledge, management, and financing more deliberately.
That’s what we mean by taking solutions further and faster: not applying a formula from one place to another, but learning from our work, investing in regional relationships, and helping partners move from shared priorities toward durable action.
We’re excited for what this new chapter can make possible. With CTC and partners in Indonesia and across the Coral Triangle, CORAL is beginning work to support a more resilient future for coral reefs – and for the communities that depend on them.
Help CORAL take reef solutions further – and faster. Your gift to our expansion campaign will strengthen our new Coral Triangle hub, deepen our work with partners in Indonesia, and help build lasting solutions for reefs and the communities that depend on them.
