CalREN Updates: 2nd Quarter 2013

Date:

The second quarter of 2013 has seen a significant number of network upgrades, including the 100G connection between CENIC and the Department of Energy’s Energy Sciences Network or ESnet at the CalREN backbone node at Sunnyvale.

Several 10 Gigabit upgrades were accomplished as well for the University of California and California State University. These include a 10G connection for UC Riverside to CalREN-DC (the network tier that provides CENIC members with connectivity for day-to-day web-related tasks such as web surfing, videoconferencing, e-mail, connectivity to the commercial Internet, and so forth) and a new 10G connection for UC Davis to CalREN-HPR (the network tier used by researchers engaging in the data-intensive sciences) at the Sunnyvale backbone node. The San Diego State University also received two 10G connections to provide the campus with diverse, high-performance connectivity to the CalREN backbone via Los Angeles and San Diego.

Two new Gigabit connections were provided to CSU Dominguez Hills as well, providing the campus diversity along new fiber paths to the Los Angeles and Tustin backbone nodes, and Sierra College was also provided with a Gigabit connection to CalREN at the Sacramento backbone mode. Finally, all K-12 schools in the Burbank Unified School District obtained a new Gigabit connection to CalREN as well.
