What is happening in Syria?
The Syrian conflict, which began in 2011 as a wave of peaceful protests during the Arab Spring, quickly spiraled into one of the most devastating wars of our time. Over the years, the country has become a battleground for numerous factions and foreign powers, with ordinary Syrians bearing the consequences.
More than 600,000 people have been killed, and over 13 million have been displaced, many of them children. Infrastructure has crumbled, the economy has collapsed, and entire cities lie in ruins. Despite numerous attempts at peace talks, sustainable solutions have remained elusive.
Conflict escalated in November 2024 after rebel groups launched a major offensive in the northwest. Assad’s regime have retaliated, with international states, like Russia and the US, getting directly involved.
