After 25 years, International Alert is concluding its operations in Nepal. During this time Nepal experienced a number of major political transitions, including the peace process, constitutional reform, federalisation and transitional justice efforts. We have worked alongside civil society organisations, government institutions, media and conflict-affected communities to promote peace, inclusive governance, gender equality and justice.
This learning and legacy paper documents our key achievements, approaches, partnerships and lessons learned. It draws on programme experience, institutional learning and reflections from Alert staff and partner organisations. It highlights the importance of locally led, conflict-sensitive and gender-responsive approaches to peacebuilding. We demonstrate how long-term partnerships, community empowerment, policy engagement and adaptive programming have contributed to sustainable change.
The paper also captures good practices and insights that remain relevant for future peacebuilding and governance initiatives in Nepal and beyond. It serves as a resource for practitioners, policymakers and organisations committed to building peaceful, just and inclusive societies.
