A Season of Hope: Returning Magic to the Border

In Mexico, at the border, the lasting impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic are still felt deeply, even four years later. While some scars, like economic rebuilding and job losses, are visible, others remain heartbreakingly hidden.

One of the most devastating marks is the rising suicide rate among children and teens. Childhood, once a time of innocence and wonder, is interrupted by the weight of adult struggles and an uncertain future. Many young ones in Ciudad Juarez face an uphill battle, vulnerable to the lure of illicit activities as they grow up without the tools to navigate life’s challenges.

But the holidays offer a chance to restore some of the magic. They are a time of connection, of family, and of creating memories that could anchor a child’s hope for a better future. For these children, toys aren’t just playthings—they’re symbols of joy, love, and possibility.

This past Christmas, because of you, 300 children received special gift bags filled with toys, candy, coloring books, crayons, and water bottles. But these bags were filled with more than items—they carried seeds of hope and a reminder that they are seen, valued, and loved.

A single gift may not change the course of a life, but it can plant a memory—a spark of warmth that stays with them through the hardest times. Perhaps one day, as these children face challenges, they’ll remember this moment. And maybe it will remind them that even the smallest actions can create ripples of change in the world.
