Global Risks Report: It is time to treat violent conflict as a global emergency

Date:

International Alert responds to the Global Risks Report 2025 from the World Economic Forum.

Commenting on the World Economic Forum Global Risks Report, Nic Hailey CMG, Executive Director of International Alert, said:

It is time to treat violent conflict as a global emergency. It is growing more deadly, displacing millions, crippling progress towards shared global goals on poverty and even climate change, and wreaking havoc on economic growth.

Peace requires many efforts, from geopolitical commitment and diplomacy, to community-level peacebuilding; from tackling structural violence and inequalities, to dealing with individual trauma and reconciliation once the fighting has ended.

The global infrastructures, anchored in the United Nations, needed to resolve and manage conflict exist, but states need to re-commit their support to them. They must make conflict prevention and peacebuilding foreign policy priorities and commit the diplomatic and financial resources that are needed to sustain peace.
