One of the most rewarding things about working in meteorology is that our work can actually save lives. Since 2020, my colleague Jeff Masters and I have provided critical coverage of some of the most severe weather events of the century at Yale Climate Connections. Our stories have been read and shared by tens of thousands of people in the paths of tropical cyclones, including hurricanes and typhoons — in Florida, in the Caribbean, and around the world. In the U.S. and Caribbean, this decade’s hurricanes have cost nearly $400 billion and taken more than 1,600 lives.
This year, Jeff and I are thrilled to be joined by our new meteorologist, Irene Sans, who is helping us expand our Spanish-language coverage of hurricanes. We want to make this our most successful season of hurricane reporting to date, and that’s why we’re asking for your help today.
Through the end of this month, we’re running a reader fundraising drive to help us ensure that we can continue to grow our work to help people protect themselves and their loved ones during extreme weather. And thanks to a generous Yale Climate Connections reader, every dollar you donate by August 1 will be matched, up to $10,000.
