How Coral Reef Conservation Delivered Measurable Impact in 2025 [REPORT]

Date:

For millions of people around the world and countless species beneath the waves, coral reefs are far more than a tourist destination. They are essential lifelines. Reefs support food systems, protect coastlines, and sustain economies, yet today they face immense pressures that threaten their longevity.

In this context, the 2025 Impact Report from the Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL) isn’t just a recap of numbers. This report is a narrative of urgency, innovation, and enduring hope.

Why Impact Matters More than Ever

Climate change is driving the worst coral bleaching events on record, with over 80% of the world’s reefs experiencing heat stress in recent years, pushing reef systems into “uncharted territory.” Scientists warn that without rapid action, coral loss could accelerate even further.

We know coral reefs can adapt to rising ocean temperatures, but not without intentional, foundational efforts.

Amid this global challenge, CORAL’s work stands as both a response and a roadmap, showing how local solutions rooted in science and community engagement can make a measurable difference.

Stories of Impact

The 2025 Impact Report weaves together real achievements with the broader story of reef resilience. Here’s a sneak peek:

Protected areas = resilient ecosystems.

Across priority regions, CORAL and partners advanced effectively-managed marine protected areas that improve fish populations and protect critical spawning sites. In 2025, this work supported healthier reef systems and more sustainable fisheries across millions of acres of ocean, reinforcing the link between reef health and coastal livelihoods.

Science that shapes strategy.

CORAL’s science has always been designed for action. In 2025, research guided management improvements, pollution reduction strategies, and fisheries policies. This strengthened the conditions reefs need to withstand climate stress and supported measurable conservation outcomes across priority regions.

We can’t wait for you to see what’s on the horizon!

Cleaner water for healthier reefs.

Lasting reef health starts upstream. Working alongside local partners and Indigenous communities, we saw wastewater treatment improvements and progress on watershed solutions, keeping millions of gallons of polluted runoff out of reef ecosystems. Reducing land-based pollution also reduces daily stress on corals so they can grow and recover.

Alliance-driven impact at scale.

None of this happens in isolation. CORAL works through a global alliance of 100+ partner organizations, including 11 core partners. We all work together to align science, policy, and local leadership to reduce key threats and accelerate solutions across regions.

Each impact story is an important piece of a broader strategy, recognizing reefs as dynamic systems shaped by climate, communities, and opportunity.
A Movement in Motion

This report goes beyond performance metrics. It reflects a deeper narrative: coral reefs are not static relics but living systems capable of adaptation…if we help them. Grounded in science and anchored in partnerships, CORAL’s approach supports locally-led action that is built to last.

The 2025 Impact Report celebrates collective wins and also points forward to the challenges ahead in 2026 and beyond.

Beyond 2025 and into 2026

Reefs need more than applause. They need action.

By reading the 2025 Impact Report, you’ll gain insight into how targeted conservation can protect ecosystems, bolster communities, and slow the worst effects of climate change. And as we launch into 2026, your support matters more than ever, whether you share the report, join a community partner, or donate to scale proven solutions. Every action is a ripple that feeds a larger wave of impact.
