Investments Needed to Protect Michiganders from High Energy & Water Utility Bills

Date:

LANSING, MI – Gov. Whitmer’s annual budget presentation is scheduled for tomorrow, February 5, and is expected to include some upcoming investments available for Michigan households. NRDC released the following statements in support of investments to make utilities more affordable in Michigan:

“Michigan needs to invest in helping families repair their homes and increase their access to weatherization programs,” said Derrell Slaughter, Climate & Clean Energy Policy Director at NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council). “A quarter of all Michigan homes that were eligible for weatherization help could not access it, due to under-funding. Providing $10 million in funding for repair work can deliver the result of safe, comfortable, and affordable homes for people who need it most, especially seniors on fixed incomes.”

“Funding to assist families at risk of water shutoffs is critical to ensure people can meet their basic day-to-day needs,” said Cyndi Roper, Senior Policy Advocate at NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council). “There is no permanent state or federal program to address unaffordable water bills in Michigan. No one should be forced to live without water and sanitation.”

NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council) is an international nonprofit environmental organization with more than 3 million members and online activists. Established in 1970, NRDC uses science, policy, law and people power to confront the climate crisis, protect public health and safeguard nature. NRDC has offices in New York City, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Beijing and Delhi (an office of NRDC India Pvt. Ltd).
