Memorandum of Understanding between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States
Description
On June 17, 2026, President Donald J. Trump signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Iran at the Palace of Versailles in France. The Memorandum declares an immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon. Both sides committed to refrain from initiating war or threatening force against one another and to respect each other’s sovereignty. The agreement opens a 60-day window, extendable by mutual consent, for negotiations toward a final deal.
Iran committed to arranging safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, at no charge, for 60 days. Simultaneously, the United States committed to begin removing its naval blockade immediately upon signing and to fully end it within 30 days. Iran reaffirmed that it will not procure or develop nuclear weapons
The White House stated that the agreement ensures Iran will never obtain a nuclear weapon and that any sanctions relief or economic benefits are strictly contingent on Iran’s continued compliance. The State Department has since identified the memorandum as a continuing regional priority alongside efforts to secure full and free transit through the Strait and support peace and stability in the region.
