The Social Security Administration is overhauling the way one of its programs is used.

The agency announced earlier this year that it was making big strides towards a digital-first platform for Social Security.

Now, the agency is looking to reform its Supplemental Security Income program through digital means.

According to the agency, Social Security Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano created a new SSI Improvement Team in September 2025 to improve efficiency and help Supplemental Security Income recipients comply with program requirements.

The team is currently working through more than 170 reforms with the broader Social Security Administration to implement.

“Supplemental Security Income is a lifeline for millions of Americans,” Bisignano told NJ.com. “Through a digital-first transformation, I am committed to strengthening payment accuracy, streamlining program processes and delivering benefits to those who need them.”

What are some of the reforms the Social Security Administration is making to the Supplemental Security Income Program?

The Social Security Administration expanded a program that would identify assets that may affect eligibility for Supplemental Security Income.

The agency said the reform is aimed at cracking down on improper payments. By identifying them early, the agency says it can make more accurate payments and ensure benefits reach those who need them.

The Social Security Administration also created a “decision tree” for Supplemental Security Income recipients who are institutionalized that would allow hospitals and care facilities to process forms and manage SSI payments on the residents’ behalf.
