The Things We Carry: Building Bridges in Nigeria

Date:

November 15, 2024

As part of our “Things We Carry” campaign, we reflect on the burdens carried by those living in conflict zones—communities torn apart by violence, extremism, and uncertainty. In Nigeria, where Boko Haram’s insurgency has devastated countless lives, we are working to carry the weight of peace and healing. Together, we can lighten the load.

Through our radio programming, such as The Story of Us, we’ve reached over 12 million listeners across conflict-affected regions, including 3,000 former Boko Haram members. These shows do more than tell stories—they challenge perceptions and spark reconciliation. Surveys revealed that 75% of listeners became more open to reintegrating former extremists. This shift has led to a 40% decrease in violent incidents in targeted areas, and hundreds of Boko Haram soldiers have laid down their weapons, choosing peace over destruction.

The things we carry in our work don’t stop there. This year, during government protests, Christian and Muslim communities in Nigeria protected each other during prayer and worship services. These interfaith efforts, where human shields were formed to ensure safety, proved that despite the weight of conflict, the desire for unity and peace can prevail.

But we can’t carry this burden alone.

We need your help to continue these life-changing initiatives. By supporting our work, you help us counter extremism, build trust between divided communities, and empower Nigerians to create a peaceful future.

Join us in carrying the hope for peace in Nigeria and beyond. Together, we can lighten the load.
