Cities and regions are making the clean-energy transition real, but scaling what works needs predictable policy, unlocked finance, and partnerships that let communities lead. In this edition, we spotlight how Southeast Asia is accelerating renewables, why now, and what it will take to sustain the surge.
We are proud to share that ICLEI President Mayor Katrin Stjernfeldt Jammeh has been announced as a co-chair of the COP30 Local Leaders Forum (3–5 Nov, Rio de Janeiro), which will set the stage to amplify subnational leadership ahead of Belém. We also invite cities and regions to encourage the networks they are a part of to endorse the COP30 LGMA Joint Position.

While some regions tap the brakes on renewables, Southeast Asia is moving in the opposite direction. The region’s clean energy transition is gaining speed, driven not only by national goals but increasingly by the leadership of local and regional governments. Through the RENEW-SEA project, led by ICLEI, cities and provinces have shown that subnational ambition can translate into real action. Now national governments must align policy, unlock finance, and make space for cities to lead at scale.
