Trump’s Chaotic Halt to Federal Grants and Loans

Date:

WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Trump ordered an immediate across-the-board freeze on grants, loans, and other federal financial assistance.

Manish Bapna, president of NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council) made the following statement:

“Trump is cutting Americans loose, abandoning families, and sowing confusion in communities across the country.

“From the White House, this is the reckless stroke of a pen. On the ground, it’s a cold home in the dead of winter. It’s a child going hungry at school. It’s a family that can’t pay the rent. It’s higher utility costs for low-income households in every state.

“This is help Congress approved on behalf of the public it serves. Trump has no authority to cancel it. This administration needs to follow the law.

“It’s not even clear how many people this hurts. Will Los Angeles fire victims get emergency help? Will welders and pipe fitters upgrading local water systems still get paid? Will urgently needed medicines be cut off from struggling people abroad?

“This is chaos.”

NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council) is an international nonprofit environmental organization with more than 3 million members and online activists. Established in 1970, NRDC uses science, policy, law and people power to confront the climate crisis, protect public health and safeguard nature. NRDC has offices in New York City, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Beijing and Delhi (an office of NRDC India Pvt. Ltd).
