Action Against Hunger today announced that it is coming together with Chariot, a payments company, major fundraising platforms and others across the philanthropic sector on October 10th to launch the first Donor Advised Funds (DAF) Day, a new kind of giving day that aims to reframe how DAFs are used––and who uses them.
DAFs are a tax-advantaged charitable giving account, similar to a 401(k) for retirement or a Health Saving Account (HSA) for health care expenses, with DAFs earmarked for philanthropic contributions. DAFs are playing an increasingly important role in philanthropy. New research shows that:
- The number of DAF accounts has grown 9x since 2012.
- DAFs disbursed $52 billion to nonprofits in 2022 alone.
- DAF donors give 19 times more than other donors.
- When existing donors starts giving from a DAF, their annual support increases 96%, on average.
“DAF Day comes at a critical time. Around the world, one in three people worry about where their next meal is coming from, yet even among countries in a hunger crisis, only 35% of hunger-related funding needs are met,” said Eric Bebernitz, Director of External Relations, Action Against Hunger. “We welcome contributions through donor advised funds and are excited to spotlight them as a charitable giving option. Experts estimate there is more than $230 billion in DAF accounts. If Action Against Hunger were to receive even a small fraction of that funding, it would make a significant impact. For example, it takes us $50 to save a child’s life by providing a full 45-day treatment of therapeutic food, enough to restore their health and secure their future.”
Ahead of DAF Day, Action Against Hunger is encouraging donors with any DAF to sign up on www.DAFday.com. Action Against Hunger has enabled DAFpay, Chariot’s 3-click DAF payment option, on its website to facilitate real-time participation among DAF donors. It also enables recognition of DAF donors in online fundraising, which Chariot noted has never been possible before.
